While riding through the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge, we were surprised and delighted to capture a photograph of this Roseate Spoonbill. It never moved, and we were careful not to become too aggressive in our quest for a photograph. It is a little blurry, but a good reminder of a great bike ride and a beautiful bird.
Wikipedia states that the Roseate Spoonbill measures between 28 and 34 inches in length, with a wingspan of 47 to 52 inches. The mature bird will weigh between 2.6 and 4 lbs.
The Roseate Spoonbill is my choice for today's Saturday Critter Challenge. Thank you to the host, Viewing Nature with Eileen.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI love the beautiful Spoonbill, a beautiful birds to see!
There are a couple being seen in Maryland recently.
Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a great weekend.
Thanks Eileen. I didn't know they had come up so far. I'd be ecstatic to see one in the wild here. I go to Cape May quite often and walk the nature trails. It is known for birding, perhaps I'll see one one day.
DeleteThat is my very favorite Florida bird! I so rarely see one that it is very special to hear of your sighting. They are just so unique and beautiful! WOW! I would love to go to that preserve! Hugs, Diane
ReplyDeleteIt was surprising to look within the opening of the branches and see him/her quietly watching us back.
DeleteIt is beautiful :-D
ReplyDeleteThanks Ananka.
DeleteWhat a stunning bird the Roseate Spoonbill is! I’ve only seen photos so far and never had the chance to spot one in real life – but it’s definitely on my wish list now πͺΆπ. You both did a wonderful job keeping your distance and not startling the bird – that photo will always remind you of this magical moment.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, Sanibel does seem like a truly enchanting place – just as you mentioned in your reply to my comment recently ✨.
By the way, feel free to write to me in English – unless you really enjoy the wild poetry of Google Translate! π
Warm greetings from Austria and wishing you a lovely week ahead!

Yes, I'm sure the translations are often very odd. :)
