We recently spent five days on Sanibel Island, Florida. It was our fourth time down, and the devastation from Hurricane Ian is still visible. Yet, the islanders and businesses are booming back. There were still shuttered areas, but many businesses have reopened. We were saddened to see that the hotel we always stayed in, The West Wind, has been torn down, but we are hoping they will rebuild it. The place we chose to stay in, Periwinkle Cottages, was terrific and a perfect substitute for The West Wind.
Sanibel is known for seashells, and the beach did not disappoint us. Fighting conchs, enormous cockleshells, and pristinely pink scallops, the photograph does not show the beauty of the shells. We also found a few olive shells, whelks, and many small shells with holes for stringing into projects or jewelry. I also found an intact angel wing seashell and managed to get it home in the same condition. If you have a chance to visit Sanibel Island, I can promise you will find shells.
I have to limit myself on how many I bring home before I even step on the airplane. I packed a large plastic container inside my suitcase to be filled with seashells. Doing so keeps me from bringing home too many. There were mountains of shells on the beach while we were there. I highly recommend wearing water shoes if you plan to go. Seashells are beautiful, but walking on them can feel like gravel under your feet.
Thank you so much for visiting my blog – I truly appreciated your kind comment. Your German translation was spot on, by the way – but feel free to write to me in English too. I understand most of it quite well, and if I ever get stuck, Google Translate is always there to help 😉.
ReplyDeleteAbout Becoming Led Zeppelin – unlike the Elvis or Queen films, this one isn’t a feature film but a documentary, with never-before-seen footage, interviews, and concert clips. I’m quite sure: if you enjoy the band’s music, you’ll enjoy the film too! And “Stairway to Heaven” sounds like an absolutely epic prom theme! 🎶
I also loved reading about your time on Sanibel Island… even though the damage from Hurricane Ian is still so present, and your favorite hotel had to be torn down. I’m keeping my fingers crossed it will be rebuilt one day 🤞. The heron photo is stunning, and I’m quite smitten with the shells as well 🐚.
All the best from Austria,
Traude
Hello, and thank you, and hopefully, I will remember that I can write in English next time. I love Google Translate. The world at your fingertips. Thanks for the tip about the Led Zeppelin film. It sounds like something we would see on a rainy afternoon at a matinee. I will tell him about it at dinner tonight. Sanibel is a magical place. It is 65% undeveloped and there is a lot of wildlife. We even saw a coyote and a very large alligator. I will be posting some of those to Saturday Critters over the next few weeks.
