It is so intricate isn't it. We don't get hornets over here in Scotland just paper wasps. I would never harm the wasps here as they are so important in our ecosystem. I was reading up how smart wasps are, amazing really :-D
I find it fascinating, and when they fall to the ground mid-winter, sometimes save bits of the paper. They never use an old nest, but always construct a new one. We enjoy seeing them among the bare branches in winter and always exclaim in surprise when they have been near someone's home. If they are too close, they must be destroyed. These hornets are very aggressive. I've been surprised by a sting in the past, I didn't know they were in a bush near our side yard and one stung me as I walked by. They are very territorial. Paper wasps usually leave people alone if you don't bother them, hornets are always angry. My son didn't know there was a nest in his yard, and suddenly they were stinging the top of his head as he mowed his grass. They can be lethal if too many sting. I do love wasps though, and love to watch the gentle varieties flit around my flowers. They are like insect fairies.

ReplyDeleteThank you, I found it as I walked around the neighborhood a few years ago. A testament to being at the right place at exactly the right time.
