Saturday Critters - Ding Darling's Alligator

"The refuge was established to safeguard and enhance the wildlife habitat of Sanibel Island, to protect endangered and threatened species, and to provide feeding, nesting, and roosting areas for migratory birds. The refuge is part of the largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystem in the United States and is world famous for its spectacular migratory bird populations. In 1967, the refuge was renamed for conservation pioneer Jay Norwood “Ding” Darling, who was instrumental in its founding. More than 40 percent of the refuge is Congressionally designated wilderness." If you look closely, you may spot an alligator. Perhaps this cropped shot will help. That's my husband on the walkway, can you see the alligator hopefully floating beneath the bridge? The Ding Darling Refuge alligator, Sanibel, Florida, is my Saturday Critter. Saturday Critters - Sanibel Island Gecko

"The lizard in the image is a Common House Gecko (also known as Asian House Gecko, Pacific House Gecko, or Moon Lizard), scientifically known as Hemidactylus frenatus." ~Google A common gecko was small enough to wander into the shower through a small drainage slit in the window frame. He was so adorable. I didn't want him to die in the cottage we stayed in. With just a small prod to his tail, he jumped on my thumb; he was half the size of it, and I deposited him in the front garden. I hope he enjoyed the shower we shared. The photo was taken in Sanibel, Florida. Thank you to Viewing Nature with Eileen for the opportunity to take part in Saturday Critters .

Saturday Critters - Roseate Spoonbill

While riding through the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge , we were surprised and delighted to capture a photograph of this Roseate Spoonbill. It never moved, and we were careful not to become too aggressive in our quest for a photograph. It is a little blurry, but a good reminder of a great bike ride and a beautiful bird. Wikipedia states that the Roseate Spoonbill measures between 28 and 34 inches in length, with a wingspan of 47 to 52 inches. The mature bird will weigh between 2.6 and 4 lbs. The Roseate Spoonbill is my choice for today's Saturday Critter Challenge. Thank you to the host, Viewing Nature with Eileen .
